About The Book
"Potemkin, Inc." by Philippe Joly

The Only 80/20 Rule That Matters Is The 20 You Show And The 80 You Don’t!

THE BLURB

FORGET WHAT YOU LEARNED IN BUSINESS SCHOOL: THE ONLY 80/20 RULE THAT MATTERS IS THE 20 YOU SHOW AND THE 80 YOU DON'T.

Entrepreneurs always seem hungry for success, don’t they?
But what if many were also just hungry, literally, as they struggle in their quest for success?

Philippe Joly shares his true, entertaining, and funny stories and anecdotes, to show a controversial reality behind many Start-Ups, and takes the reader on a guided visit backstage to see what is really going on.

POTEMKIN, Inc. is a personal visit behind the scenes, which provides a fascinating insight into the Samson and Goliath battles that many one-man bands, and small businesses, fight and win, every day, by inventing their own rules, and finding creative ways in order to seize opportunities.

An eye-opening first book that offers every small business owner some serious food for thought, and a must-read for anyone embarking on the rollercoaster ride of starting a business.

About the book POTEMKIN, Inc. by Philippe Joly
What are the Potemkin villages?

The Potemkin Villages

What are the Potemkin villages? Their origin is attributed to Prince Grigori Alexandrovich Potyomkin, better known as Potemkin

The concept dates back to 18th century Russia ruled by Catherine The Great, and has been commonly used (and is still used today) in order to give a perception that everything is good by showing a small selected sample and making it seem as the normality rather than the exception.

The legend goes that Potemkin organised a boat trip on the Dnieper river in order to show case to the Empress and her foreign Embassadors guests, the newly-annexed region of Crimea as prosperous. In fact, Crimea was a region under construction and in turmoil, a desolated land, where frustrated peasants were living in poverty, and where mutinies were common occurrence.

Potemkin built fake villages along the desolated banks of the river, where he had confined the route of the Royal visit. He constructed painted wooden facades of splendid houses that he erected in front of crumbling and basic structures. Peasants were dressed up in beautiful clothes in advance of the Empress' arrival. They were fed and ordered to dance and chant. Some cattle and animals were also brought in to add to the prosperity he needed to portray. Each night, the wooden facades, the animals and the people were transported to the next stop along the route for the next planned performance.

The Potemkin villages contributed to increase the perception that the Russian Empire was one of the most prosperous and powerful in Europe. This perception then created further partnership opportunities, which in turn, reinforced Russia's real power and prosperity.

The book "POTEMKIN, Inc." is my adaptation of the Potemkin villages to modern entrepreneurship and Start-Ups.
